A sixth-grade girl was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a shop in Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area after being restrained and having her hands and legs tied, police said on Monday.
The minor had reportedly stepped out of her house late on September 16 to purchase stationery when she was allegedly lured into a nearby shop by the accused, where she was restrained and sexually assaulted.
The incident came to light after Delhi Police received a PCR call on the night of September 16 regarding the alleged sexual assault of a minor by a shopkeeper.
Teams from Sadar Bazar Police Station, along with the ACPs of Sadar Bazar and the Women Police Station, reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
Based on the girl’s complaint, a case was registered at the Women Police Station of North District under relevant provisions of law, including those dealing with rape, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and wrongful confinement.
Police identified the accused as 56-year-old Maqsood and arrested him. He was subsequently sent to judicial custody on the same day after completion of the required legal procedures.
Further investigation is underway.
The case comes days after another serious crime against a minor was reported in North Delhi, where a teenage girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by four persons, including three juveniles.
According to police, the girl’s severely decomposed body was found near a field along Kushak Road in the Swaroop Nagar area on September 13. The condition of the body initially made it difficult for police to establish the victim’s gender.
Police said the girl was acquainted with the accused and had travelled with them in a tempo. During the journey, the group allegedly consumed alcohol before sexually assaulting her. She was subsequently allegedly stabbed to death and her body dumped in an open area.
Four persons linked to the case, including three juveniles, were arrested following the investigation.
