Acclaimed singer Kailash Kher has shared his perspective on the debate around creative freedom and the need for sensitivity while addressing socially or culturally sensitive subjects through art.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Kher said sensitivity, decency and culture are essential qualities for an artist. He stressed that a true artist should be able to understand others’ pain while using their work to bring happiness to people.
Kher said he believes the stage should be used to win people’s hearts.
“Of course. An artist is someone who is sensitive. And if someone is not sensitive and still calls themselves an artist, then they are not an artist; they are a slanderer. The stage exists to win people’s hearts,” he said.
He added that making meaningless statements or attempting to entertain people without sensitivity could amount to what he described as slander, while acknowledging that satire and even such forms of expression can also be considered art.
“Everyone has their own thoughts. But our thoughts are directed towards purity,” Kher said.
The singer further explained that genuine artistic expression should come from a sense of empathy and positivity.
He said a meaningful feeling is one that allows a person to feel sadness for someone else’s pain, while also being able to make others happy through laughter and creative expression.
“There should be a sense of purity. There should be cleanliness, civility, and culture. These are very necessary virtues for any artist,” he concluded.
Kher first rose to prominence with his soulful track Allah Ke Bande from the 2003 film Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II.
He subsequently delivered several popular songs, including Teri Deewani, Saiyyan and Bam Lahiri.
Kher has also lent his voice to films including Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Corporate, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love and the Baahubali series, among others.
