Rapper Kid Cudi has marked the 17th anniversary of his debut studio album Man on the Moon: The End of Day, reflecting on how the 2009 record transformed his life and became the beginning of his journey to connect with listeners who felt alone.
Cudi took to Instagram to share the album cover and thank collaborators Plain Pat, Emile, Dot and Kanye West for believing in him and helping shape the project.
“Sept 15th 2009 my life changed. It was never the same after that,” Cudi wrote, describing the message behind the album as an effort to help young people “not feel alone” and provide shelter to those who felt lost.
He said the album marked the beginning of his 18-year journey with fans and credited his collaborators for recognising something in him before he fully saw it himself.
“I wanna thank Plain Pat, Emile, Dot, and Kanye. Without you 4, things would not have gone the way they did. U believed in me,” he wrote, adding that they had helped “change the whole game for the better.”
Cudi also addressed fans around the world, saying the album represented his stories, heart and soul and was created so listeners would never feel alone.
“Always remember, I am your Big Brother. And I said this will be my world. I told u so,” he wrote.
He also gave a special mention to Sylvia Rhone, thanking her for recognising his talent early in his career and taking a chance on him.
Released on September 15, 2009, Man on the Moon: The End of Day is a concept album narrated by fellow rapper Common. It followed Cudi’s 2008 project A Kid Named Cudi and became the first instalment of the Man on the Moon trilogy.
The album produced three singles — “Day ’n’ Nite”, “Make Her Say” and “Pursuit of Happiness”. Cudi further promoted the record through tours with Asher Roth and Lady Gaga.
The album received generally positive reviews from critics for its composition and distinctive approach to hip-hop. It was also included on several year-end best-album lists and earned three Grammy Award nominations.
