India-born supermodel, television host, producer, cookbook author and actress Padma Lakshmi remembered the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, reflecting on her childhood memories of New York’s Twin Towers on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
Lakshmi shared a video of the 9/11 attacks on Instagram and paid tribute to first responders who risked their lives and health during the tragedy.
Recalling her childhood in New York, Lakshmi said the Twin Towers had been a familiar landmark and part of her early memories of the city.
“Growing up as a kid in New York, those twin towers were always a landmark. I remember my mom always telling me to look up for them when we went downtown. I remember the day the world changed for all of us 25 years ago,” she wrote.
She added that she was away from New York when the attacks occurred and mourned the lives lost and the lasting impact on families.
“Those twin towers were an emblem of our childhood. They were part of an age gone by for so many of us,” Lakshmi wrote, while thanking first responders who put their lives and health on the line.
“Thinking today of all the lives lost and the families who were irrevocably affected,” she added.
The September 11 attacks were coordinated suicide attacks carried out by al-Qaeda in the United States in 2001. Nineteen hijackers seized four commercial passenger planes. Two were flown into New York’s Twin Towers, another struck the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, while the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft.
Born in India, Lakshmi moved to the United States as a child and began her career as a model before moving into television. She has authored five books and gained prominence as the host of Top Chef.
She is also the creator, host and executive producer of the docuseries Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi and has received 16 Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
