Five Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) employees were suspended with immediate effect on Monday following the deadly collapse of a multi-storey building in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan, as rescue operations continued at the site.
The suspended officials, all from the MCD’s South Zone, are Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Ranvir Singh, Executive Engineer Lalit Kumar Goel, Assistant Engineer Sunil Chauhan and Junior Engineer Ashish Kumar.
The action followed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s visit to the collapse site on Monday morning to review the rescue and relief operations. She had assured that strict action would be taken against officials found responsible for negligence or lapses.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the government has also directed the immediate sealing of illegal five-storey buildings across Delhi as part of measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure compliance with safety norms.
At least seven people have so far been confirmed dead in the collapse. Several others are undergoing treatment, while many are still feared trapped beneath the debris.
Search and rescue operations continued through the night, with teams working to locate and safely evacuate those who may remain trapped.
The five-storey building, known as ‘Hostel Daze’, was being operated as a boys’ paying guest (PG) accommodation, with several students staying there when it collapsed. An adjacent building also reportedly collapsed, raising further concerns over the structural safety of buildings in the area.
Police have registered an FIR at South Campus police station against building owner Hariram Bansal and others, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said.
Delhi Police have formed 10 teams to trace and apprehend Bansal after issuing a Look Out notice against him.
The investigation into the collapse and possible lapses leading to the tragedy is underway.
