Nine people, including three women, five youths and a resort employee, were arrested after police allegedly busted a sex racket at a resort in Lataguri in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, officials said on Monday.
The arrests followed a late-night raid at a resort near Saraswati Banbasti in Lataguri on Sunday. Police said they found three women and five youths in an objectionable condition during the operation. A resort employee was also taken into custody.
Malbazar police station Inspector-in-Charge Paljar Bhutia said illegal activities would not be tolerated at resorts in Lataguri and that the police were investigating whether other resorts in the tourist town were also being used for similar activities.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Malbazar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sudipta Sarkar, Bhutia and Kranti outpost Officer-in-Charge Tenzing Bhutia.
During the preliminary investigation, police found that the three women were residents of Siliguri. Officials said one was from Haryana while another was from Uttar Dinajpur district, and that they had been living in Siliguri for several years. The five youths arrested in the raid were from Assam.
Police suspect the alleged racket was being operated with the involvement of a youth from Lataguri. He reportedly fled after learning about the raid, and efforts are underway to trace him.
The arrests were made following information received by police sources, officials said. The accused are scheduled to be produced before a Jalpaiguri court later on Monday.
Police sources said complaints about alleged racketeering activities at several resorts in Lataguri had been received for some time, and described the latest action as part of efforts to check such activities in the tourist town.
