Madhu Chopra, mother of actress Priyanka Chopra, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding actress Kriti Sanon’s outfit in a recent festive jewellery advertisement, saying that personal choice should be accompanied by dignity and respect for others’ values.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event on Thursday, Madhu said there should be certain boundaries when it comes to personal expression.
“There has to be certain boundaries. My body, my choice works in those boundaries. It is good to do it,” she said.
Emphasising the importance of respecting social and cultural values, she added, “But that boundary is necessary. How you put your dignity, and respect other people’s values matters a lot.”
Madhu further said that clothing choices could be viewed differently depending on the setting and cultural context.
“You can do it in a place where these things are common. Sorry to say that, our children also wear it. They wear it for work, for hobbies. But it is acceptable because that works in those spaces,” she said.
The controversy erupted after Kriti faced criticism over her outfit in a Raksha Bandhan advertisement for a jewellery brand. The actress had worn an off-white ensemble featuring a bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt.
On August 25, Kriti responded to the criticism in a post on Instagram, arguing that the essence of a festival lies in emotions rather than clothing.
The brand subsequently withdrew the advertisement and issued a statement saying it had the “highest regard and deep respect” for Indian culture, traditions and festivals.
“If our recent advertisement has inadvertently hurt the sentiments of some segments of society, that was not our intent at all,” the brand said, adding that it had withdrawn the campaign from all media “out of respect”.
The brand also said the advertisement was intended to celebrate the festive occasion with families and extend that celebration to pets.
