Hollywood actress Salma Hayek once came up with an unusual plan to convince her businessman husband François-Henri Pinault to let her keep an abandoned puppy — by making him believe she was having an affair.
At the time, Hayek already had around 30 animals at home, including dogs, parrots, alpacas, horses and cats. She had promised her husband that she would not bring another animal home.
However, while filming in Bulgaria, Hayek came across an abandoned puppy and could not bring herself to leave him behind.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Hayek recalled how she devised a plan to persuade her husband.
“My husband has threatened me ‘no more, no more dogs’, so I had promised, I said, ‘I’m gonna make him believe that I’m having an affair’ and at the end I explained it’s not an affair,” she said.
She called Pinault and told him, “We need to talk” — a phrase she said she never normally used, leaving him worried.
Hayek then told him, “Listen, this breaks my heart to tell you this news because I know I’m gonna disappoint you, and it’s been really hard for me to come on with the courage to say this to you, but I cannot take it any longer.”
She continued by telling him that she had been working a lot and was feeling tired, overwhelmed and lonely.
After hearing her, Pinault became concerned and responded, “Oh, please don’t tell me you picked up another dog.”
Hayek and Pinault began dating in 2006 and married on February 14, 2009, in Paris. They later celebrated their wedding with a larger ceremony in Venice.
The couple have one daughter together, Valentina Paloma Pinault, who was born in 2007.
