In a significant and unprecedented development, the Akal Takht on Monday took a stern stand against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, declaring him a ‘Guru Dokhi’ (one who acts against the Guru) and ‘Khalsa Panth Virodhi’ (opposed to the Khalsa Panth) in connection with a controversial viral video that had recently come under scrutiny.
The announcement was made from the rostrum of the Akal Takht by Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj following deliberations by the five Sikh high priests earlier in the day.
Addressing the Sikh community, the Acting Jathedar stated that a complaint along with the viral video had been submitted to the Akal Takht for examination. He claimed that after reviewing the material, the Sikh clergy concluded that the video was genuine and not a product of Artificial Intelligence (AI) manipulation.
Based on the findings and discussions held by the Sikh religious leadership, the Akal Takht held the Chief Minister guilty of religious misconduct and announced its decision publicly.
In one of the strongest appeals issued from the Akal Takht in recent times, Giani Gargaj called upon the Sikh Sangat to distance itself from the Chief Minister. Referring to the collective Sikh community as the Guru Khalsa Panth and Guru Nanak Naam Leva Sangat, he urged followers of Sikhism not to maintain social or religious relations with Bhagwant Mann.
The Acting Jathedar’s statement, delivered in Punjabi, effectively called upon members of the Sikh community to refrain from associating with the Chief Minister in view of the findings recorded by the Sikh clergy.
The development is expected to have major religious and political ramifications in Punjab, coming at a time when tensions have already been running high over several issues involving the state government and Sikh religious institutions.
The Punjab Government has not immediately issued a response to the Akal Takht’s latest pronouncement. Political observers believe the move could trigger a fresh debate across Punjab regarding the relationship between religious authority and political leadership in the state.
