Mother-son duo electrocuted to death in Bihar’s Samastipur district

Patna, June 13, 2026
A tragic electrocution incident claimed the lives of a young woman and her six-year-old son in Bihar’s Samastipur district late Friday night, leaving the entire village in mourning.

The incident occurred at Chatra village under the Vidyapatinagar police station area in the district.

The deceased have been identified as Rangila Devi (24), wife of Kanhaiya Paswan, and her son Ratan Kumar.

The family lived in Ward No. 15 of Chatra village under Barhauna Panchayat.

According to family members, Rangila Devi and her son were sleeping inside their home when a stand fan placed nearby suddenly toppled over during the night.

Police and relatives suspect that a damaged wire in the fan had caused electrical current to pass through the appliance.

As the fan fell, both mother and son reportedly came into contact with the live current and were electrocuted.

Kanhaiya Paswan said his wife and son were sleeping near the fan when the accident occurred.

He stated that the faulty wiring made the fan electrically charged, leading to the fatal incident.

Family members rushed to rescue the two and attempted to take them for treatment, but both had already died by the time help arrived.

After receiving information about the incident on Saturday morning, personnel from the Bihar Police reached the village and began an investigation.

Vidyapatinagar Station House Officer Suraj Kumar said police prepared the inquest reports and sent both bodies to Samastipur Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The incident has triggered grief and shock across the village, with residents mourning the sudden deaths of the mother and child.

The tragedy has also renewed concerns about electrical safety and the dangers posed by faulty household appliances and exposed wiring.

Amid soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity across Bihar, many families have been relying heavily on electrical appliances such as coolers, fans, and air conditioners for relief.

In this heartbreaking case from Samastipur, the very stand fan that the family had arranged to escape the unbearable heat became the cause of tragedy.

With temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Celsius and humid conditions making daily life extremely difficult, the fan was meant to provide comfort during the night.(Agency)
