Actor Dev Sharma, who plays Lord Ram in Shri Ramayan Katha, has spoken about his faith and the different ways people choose to express their religious beliefs, saying he is proud of his Sanatani identity and has no hesitation in chanting “Jai Shri Ram” publicly.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Dev drew a comparison with Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayals of Don to explain his view on expressing one’s identity.
Referring to the songs from the two films, he said Amitabh Bachchan’s version used a louder and more high-pitched introduction, while Shah Rukh Khan’s Don presented the character’s identity in a more restrained manner.
“Instead of shouting and saying that I am Sanatani, calmly accepting that I believe in my God, that I am not ashamed of it, and that I am very proud of it is always better. It makes no difference,” he said.
At the same time, Dev said he respects different approaches to faith and worship.
“If someone wants to shout and say it, there is no problem. If someone wants to keep it inside himself and softly make a point about his belief and faith, there is no problem,” he said.
He added that, for him, both open and private expressions of faith are equally valid.
“Basically, this is an individual take on how to present it. There is no harm in saying that I am a Sanatani, and I am not ashamed of chanting Jai Shri Ram out loud in public,” Dev said.
Dev plays Lord Ram opposite Anjali Arora, who portrays Mata Sita, in Shri Ramayan Katha, a screen adaptation based on the epic. Rajniesh Duggal plays Ravana, while Sheel Verma and Nirbhay Wadhwa are also part of the cast.
The film, which released on September 25, has also drawn discussion on social media, particularly over its visual effects and aspects of its presentation.
