The core committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has expressed fresh concerns over the health of party founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, urging Pakistan’s Chief Justice to ensure the implementation of court orders regarding his medical treatment.
The committee held a meeting following reports that Imran Khan’s blood pressure had reached 192. In a statement issued after the meeting, it expressed “grave concern” over his health, citing an alleged lack of medical facilities and restrictions on meetings with his family and personal doctors, Dawn reported on Friday.
The committee said protecting Imran Khan’s health and life was an urgent humanitarian issue and that any negligence, delay or irresponsibility was unacceptable. It called for the government to allow him to meet his personal physicians, arrange the necessary medical evaluation and diagnostic tests without delay, and shift him to Shifa International Hospital for examination.
It also urged Pakistan’s Chief Justice to give the matter “immediate attention” in view of its “exceptional humanitarian importance”. The committee maintained that implementing court orders was a constitutional and legal responsibility of the relevant government and administrative bodies.
The PTI leadership appealed to people in Pakistan and overseas Pakistanis to raise their voices over the issue. It also asked party leaders, organisations and office-bearers to take up Imran Khan’s health, treatment and rights in Parliament, provincial assemblies and other relevant forums.
Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023 following convictions that his party has described as politically motivated. Since his ouster from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022, he has faced several cases, including those involving state gifts and an unlawful marriage. His health during imprisonment has been a source of concern among PTI members.
