King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, is set to partially resume operations following a suspension triggered by reported attacks, airport authorities announced on Sunday.
Under the reopening arrangements, Terminal 1 will handle domestic flights, while Terminal 2 will serve international flights operated by Saudi national carriers.
The airport’s operations had been temporarily suspended by the General Authority of Civil Aviation following attacks that reportedly caused deaths and injuries, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency.
The development comes amid escalating hostilities between Yemen’s Houthi group and the Saudi-led coalition, as Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces conduct military operations to retake territory held by the Houthis.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group launched seven missile and drone attacks on Saturday, targeting airports, oil facilities and a military base in Riyadh, along with locations in Yanbu, Rabigh, Dammam, Najran and Khamis Mushait.
Saree said King Khalid International Airport was targeted in two stages. Other claimed targets included Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam.
The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted and destroyed several missiles aimed at Riyadh, Taif and Yanbu, as well as a drone in the Eastern Province.
Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defence reported that debris from two intercepted missiles fell in the Mecca and Medina regions. The Houthis denied targeting the two holy cities, describing the allegations as “false and unfounded.”
The group said its attacks followed what it described as 100 Saudi airstrikes on Houthi-held areas of Yemen in the preceding 24 hours, including the capital, Sanaa, and the Red Sea port city of Mocha in Taiz province.
