Nearly 1,000 people were arrested in France on Saturday as more than 40,000 people took part in a fresh wave of demonstrations, with clashes between protesters and police reported in several cities.
Most demonstrations remained peaceful, but confrontations broke out in Marseille, Rennes, Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and Toulouse, according to the report cited in the source material.
In Paris, police fired tear gas and charged crowds near Porte de Vincennes after some protesters reportedly launched fireworks at security personnel. Officers also deployed a water cannon to disperse demonstrators and carried out checks on people travelling through Nation Square.
Authorities had mobilised around 70,000 security personnel ahead of Saturday’s protests, following violence during demonstrations the previous weekend over rising inflation. The earlier unrest saw fires and looting, with dozens of shops reportedly targeted.
The Yellow Vests movement has announced plans for another protest on October 31.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised regional prefects, police officers, gendarmes and firefighters for their efforts to maintain public safety during the demonstrations. However, he condemned what he described as attempts by ultra-left and radical far-left groups to cause disorder in several cities, including Marseille, Lyon, Grenoble, Nantes, Angers, Lille and Paris.
In a statement posted on X, Nunez described the incidents as unacceptable and said violence against security personnel was intolerable. He also expressed support for police officers and gendarmes injured during the unrest.
The latest demonstrations highlight the continuing tensions surrounding the cost of living and public protests in France, as authorities prepare for further mobilisation in the coming days.
