India batter Tejal Hasabnis believes thorough preparation for different match situations has been key to her recent good form, providing the clarity she needs to perform in the middle order.
Tejal scored back-to-back half-centuries for India A, helping the team secure a 2-1 victory in the 50-over series against Australia A in Mohali. Her performances earned her a recall to the Indian team for the ongoing ODI series against Zimbabwe at the BCA Stadium.
Speaking to broadcasters ahead of the second ODI on Sunday, Hasabnis emphasised the importance of preparing for different scenarios as a middle-order batter.
“Preparation is very crucial as a middle-order batter because I try to be in different kinds of situations. I practise that a lot in different areas, like what areas I can target or what kind of innings I want to build,” she said.
She added that preparation helped her approach matches with greater clarity and make better decisions at the crease.
“When I’m playing in the match, I just try to have more clarity, as I guess clarity gives more results. Good preparation always helps to become clear, and clarity gives better output,” Hasabnis said.
Reflecting on her scores of 81 and 60 against Australia A, the right-handed batter said staying focused on the present and adapting to the match situation had helped her stay ahead of the opposition bowlers.
“I was just trying to look and stay present, and I was just looking at the scoreboard and adapting accordingly, and it helped me. Technically, I was just trying to be one step ahead of them, and it worked,” she said.
Asked whether her preparation was more mental or technical, Hasabnis said mindset and self-belief played a crucial role. She expressed confidence in her ability to accelerate when required while also rotating the strike to keep the scoreboard moving.
“It’s just about mindset. I know that I have both the gears. Whenever a team needs, I can just put my foot down and attack, and if given a situation, I know I am good at rotating sides. So it’s just about having that belief and following the scoreboard,” she said.
India entered the second ODI after winning the series opener by nine wickets. Hasabnis said the team was keen to maintain its winning momentum while remaining committed to its process.
“Winning and dominating is something we are looking forward to, and winning is always good. So we’ll just try to focus on our process and make today count,” she added.
