Gurjapneet Singh, Yash Thakur and Nishant Sindhu led a disciplined bowling performance as India A defeated Australia A by 49 runs in the third and final 50-over match at the CAP Siechem Ground on Sunday, avoiding a series whitewash.
Defending a target of 276, India A bowled out Australia A for 226 in 46.2 overs. The visitors suffered a dramatic collapse after reaching 177/3, losing their final seven wickets for just 49 runs. Australia A, however, clinched the three-match series 2-1.
Left-arm pacer Gurjapneet used his variations effectively to trouble the Australian batters, while right-arm fast bowler Thakur and left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Sindhu provided crucial breakthroughs in the middle and lower order.
Earlier, India A were bowled out for 275 in 49.3 overs after being asked to bat on a slow pitch offering variable bounce. Suryansh Shedge anchored the innings with a counter-attacking 66, while Vipraj Nigam contributed 40 to help the hosts recover from a top-order collapse.
India A made a brisk start through openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, who put together 83 runs for the first wicket. Prabhsimran scored 39 before falling in the 11th over, triggering a collapse in which India A lost five wickets for 35 runs to slip to 118/5.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad attempted to stabilise the innings alongside Shedge, scoring 33 off 57 balls. However, Mitchell Owen dismissed Gaikwad to leave India A struggling at 159/6.
Shedge then joined forces with Nigam to rebuild the innings, with their seventh-wicket partnership providing the momentum India A needed. The pair’s 85-run stand lifted the total to 275, giving the bowlers a competitive target to defend.
In reply, Australia A began confidently, with Josh Philippe leading an 82-run opening partnership and scoring a fluent half-century.
Nigam broke the stand by dismissing Philippe, and Liam Scott fell in the following over as India A tightened their grip on the contest.
Nathan McSweeney, who scored 39, and Lachlan Shaw, who made 31, added 58 runs for the third wicket to keep Australia A in contention. However, Anukul Roy removed Shaw, opening the door for India A’s bowlers to dismantle the lower order.
Gurjapneet, Thakur and Sindhu struck at regular intervals, while a timely run-out of Nikhil Chaudhary further weakened the visitors. Australia A were eventually dismissed for 226, handing India A a consolation victory and ensuring they finished the series with a win.
