The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police on Tuesday conducted simultaneous searches at four locations linked to Bahadurpur Block Development Officer (BDO) Anand Kumar Vibhuti in connection with a disproportionate assets case involving alleged assets worth around Rs 1.71 crore.
An eight-member EOU team led by a DSP-rank officer reached Vibhuti’s rented accommodation in Janakpuri, Bahadurpur, at around 8 a.m. Searches were also carried out at the Bahadurpur Block office and two other locations in East Champaran and Muzaffarpur.
The action followed the registration of Case No. 21/26 at the EOU police station on September 7. Investigators allege that Vibhuti accumulated assets around Rs 1.71 crore, which is 121.87 per cent more than his known sources of income.
According to officials, Vibhuti had left the residence to purchase household supplies when the EOU team arrived and reportedly did not return after learning about the raid. His wife, Ritu Anand Sahani, was present at the house and was questioned by the investigators.
Vibhuti resides in Room No. 101 on the ground floor of a five-storey building in Janakpuri. Police personnel from Bahadurpur station were deployed outside the premises, while entry of outsiders was restricted during the search.
The EOU team examined documents and other papers at the residence and gathered information regarding jewellery and other assets. Another team searched official records at the Bahadurpur Block office. Officials have not yet disclosed details of any specific evidence recovered during the searches.
The searches were also conducted at Lalbagiya under Chiraiya police station in East Champaran, Flat No. 2 at Sai Apartment in Danapur, Patna, and Vibhuti’s private residence at Saraswati Nagar Road No. 1 under Ahiyapur police station in Muzaffarpur.
Vibhuti’s Muzaffarpur connection has also drawn attention as his wife, Ritu Anand Sahani, has reportedly served as BJP district secretary for East Muzaffarpur. The couple is also reported to own a residence in the Dadarpul area of Muzaffarpur city.
Vibhuti took charge as Bahadurpur BDO around two months ago after being transferred from Kanti block in Muzaffarpur district. An official said complaints alleging corruption had previously been lodged against him with the Vigilance Department.
The rented accommodation in Bahadurpur is owned by Dr Amit Kumar, who works at private hospitals in Darbhanga.
The EOU is continuing its searches and examination of documents and assets at the four locations. Further details about the evidence recovered and the next course of action are awaited.
