BJP Leader Nidharak Singh Brar Targets Ex-Akal Takht Jathedar; Seeks Excommunication of Giani Raghbir Singh

Chandigarh, June 14, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Former Punjab State Information Commissioner and senior BJP leader Nidharak Singh Brar has strongly criticized former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, for his recent statement before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Punjab Government to probe the 2015 Behbal Kalan firing incident.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Brar alleged that Giani Raghbir Singh’s deposition against Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal reflects what he described as a “deeply biased and vindictive mindset” and suggested that the former Jathedar had abandoned Sikh traditions and principles for personal reasons.

Brar claimed that Giani Raghbir Singh’s actions indicate that he has aligned himself with the government and is pursuing a personal agenda rather than safeguarding Sikh religious traditions and institutions.

Referring to Sukhbir Singh Badal’s appearance before Sri Akal Takht Sahib on December 2, Brar asserted that the Akali leader had accepted only the moral and political responsibility for incidents that occurred during his party’s tenure, including the Behbal Kalan firing case, and had not admitted to any conspiracy or direct involvement in the firing.

The BJP leader emphasized that appearing before Sri Akal Takht Sahib and acknowledging mistakes is a long-standing Sikh tradition aimed at spiritual and moral introspection. According to him, such admissions should not be interpreted as confessions of criminal wrongdoing.

Brar further alleged that Giani Raghbir Singh had previously engaged in conduct that was inconsistent with the dignity of his religious office, including holding press conferences while serving as Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib. He said that even if the former Jathedar was removed from his position, he should not have acted in a manner that, according to Brar, weakened Sikh religious traditions.

Accusing the former Jathedar of allowing personal grievances to influence his conduct, Brar said that many Sikhs, including political opponents of Sukhbir Singh Badal, felt hurt by what they viewed as a departure from established Sikh traditions and conventions.

In his strongest remark, Brar called upon Sri Akal Takht Sahib to initiate action against Giani Raghbir Singh, alleging that he had caused damage to Sikh traditions. He demanded that the former Jathedar be excommunicated from the Khalsa Panth for what he described as conduct detrimental to Panthic traditions.

The statement comes amid an ongoing political and religious controversy surrounding the deposition of Giani Raghbir Singh before the SIT investigating the Behbal Kalan firing case, a matter that continues to generate debate within Punjab’s political and Sikh religious circles.
