Delhi Akali chief Paramjit Singh Sarna has expressed serious concern over reports that no Sikh candidate was invited for the interaction process for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, despite several accomplished Sikh academicians reportedly applying for the post.
In a statement, Sarna said the interaction process, which commenced on July 3, has created an unfortunate impression that deserving candidates from the Sikh community have been overlooked at the shortlisting stage.
He said it was particularly surprising because several serving and former Vice-Chancellors of reputed institutions, as well as eminent Sikh scholars with proven academic and administrative credentials, had reportedly submitted applications for the position. “If no Sikh candidate has been found worthy even of an interaction, it naturally raises legitimate questions about the transparency of the process, equal opportunity and the criteria adopted for shortlisting,” he said.
Sarna said Panjab University has historically stood for academic excellence, diversity and inclusiveness, and its leadership selection process must reflect those values. “The appointment of the Vice-Chancellor should inspire confidence among all stakeholders. Merit must remain the sole criterion, but the process must also be seen as fair and transparent,” he said.
