Mehbooba Mufti was on Thursday re-elected as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president for a fifth term, with the party’s electoral college unanimously backing her candidature.
According to a party press release, the unanimous vote reflected the view that Mufti had given more to the party than she had ever received from it. The proposal for her re-election was moved by senior party leader and former minister Abdul Rehman Veeri, while Mohammad Khursheed Aalam seconded it.
All members of the electoral college present at the meeting supported her candidature. Members from Jammu also participated online and extended unanimous support to her re-election, the party said.
After her re-election, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said people who had suffered for years needed healing rather than political victories.
“Those who are hurt do not need victories. They need healing. My heart is heavy and full at the same time. I am grateful. You have trusted me for the fifth time, and I do not take that lightly,” she said.
Mufti also spoke about the pain of families who had lost loved ones and the uncertainty facing young people. She said the PDP was built collectively to address people’s suffering and ensure that no one had to die searching for answers.
Mehbooba Mufti has been leading the PDP since 2003.
