Tesla will begin scaling back Cybertruck production at its Texas Gigafactory around the middle of 2027 to make room for increased manufacturing of its autonomous Cybercab vehicle, CEO Elon Musk has said.
The move signals the electric vehicle maker’s growing focus on autonomous transportation and its long-term robotaxi ambitions.
Musk did not specify whether Cybertruck production would be shifted to another facility or phased out altogether, leaving the future of the vehicle’s manufacturing operations uncertain.
Launched in 2023, the Cybertruck was initially positioned as a disruptive entrant in the electric pick-up segment and a challenger to established truck makers such as Ford. Its unconventional design and futuristic features generated considerable attention.
However, the vehicle has faced several challenges, including recalls, quality-control concerns and multiple price adjustments. These issues, along with softer consumer demand, have affected its commercial performance and limited its ability to sustain its initial momentum.
Tesla has repeatedly revised Cybertruck pricing amid efforts to stimulate demand and growing competition in the electric vehicle market.
The company is increasingly prioritising the Cybercab, a fully autonomous vehicle envisioned as the backbone of its future robotaxi network. By allocating more factory capacity to its production, Tesla aims to strengthen its position in the autonomous vehicle industry and expand its self-driving transportation services.
Meanwhile, last month, Tesla India announced a software update for its Model Y and Model Y L vehicles, introducing a range of Halloween-themed features.
The company said the update allows vehicles to receive new features and improvements remotely without requiring a visit to a service centre.
The Halloween Mode includes a ghost-themed vehicle avatar, Halloween sound effects, special lighting sequences, seasonal vehicle wraps and a themed lock sound.
