The rationalisation of polling stations across Punjab has been completed as part of the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of Photo Electoral Rolls, with January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date. The exercise was carried out in accordance with guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India.

Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Anindita Mitra, IAS, said the primary objective of the exercise was to improve accessibility and convenience for voters.

She informed that Punjab had 25,332 polling stations before the exercise. During the rationalisation process under SSR-2026, 39 new polling stations were created based on elector population and geographical accessibility.

Following the exercise, the total number of polling stations in the state has increased to 25,371.

All newly created polling stations were inspected by the concerned Electoral Registration Officers, and the proposals were finalised in consultation with recognised political parties.
