The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police has arrested a senior corporate executive in connection with the alleged multi-crore scam involving the sale of fake passes for UNESCO-tagged Durga Puja festival tours in West Bengal.
The accused, identified as Dhrubojyoti Basu, is a senior official of Mass Art, the corporate entity allegedly used to market and sell the fraudulent passes. He was named in the FIR and had reportedly been absconding since last week, following the arrest of former West Bengal Tourism Minister Indranil Sen.
Basu’s arrest is the second major action in the case after Sen, a singer-turned-politician, was taken into custody.
Investigators allege that Mass Art, formally headed by Sen’s wife Madhuchhanda Sen, was operated by the former minister and Basu to generate revenue through unauthorised passes sold under the pretext of access to UNESCO-tagged festival tours.
Madhuchhanda Sen is also named in the FIR but remains out of custody after securing anticipatory bail from the Calcutta High Court. She has been questioned twice. The couple’s daughter, Averi Sen, and corporate entities linked to her are also under financial and administrative scrutiny.
Indranil Sen, who is in police custody, is being questioned regularly by the SIT. Investigators have also questioned nine other people in connection with the case, including Madhuchhanda Sen.
Sen is scheduled to be produced before a Kolkata court on November 10. Police are gathering forensic and documentary evidence as the investigation proceeds.
The case is being investigated separately by Kolkata Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). City police arrested Sen outside the ED’s Salt Lake office last week.
