Shares of several Tata Group companies came under selling pressure in early trade on Friday, with Tata Chemicals and Tata Investment Corporation among the biggest losers, amid heightened uncertainty following the dispute over N Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as Tata Sons chairman.

By 9:40 a.m., Tata Chemicals had fallen 8 per cent to Rs 716.65 on the NSE, touching its intraday low, while Tata Investment Corporation declined as much as 5 per cent to Rs 682.55.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) dropped 3.41 per cent to an intraday low of Rs 2,115.40, compared with its previous close of Rs 2,190. The stock was last trading around Rs 2,124, down about 3 per cent.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles declined 3.34 per cent to Rs 304 from its previous close of Rs 314.50. Tata Power fell as much as 2.20 per cent to Rs 360.90 from Rs 369 and was last down 1.83 per cent at Rs 362.25.

Tata Commercial Vehicles touched an intraday low of Rs 430.20, down 1.35 per cent from its previous close of Rs 436.10, while Tata Steel fell nearly 1 per cent to Rs 185.66 from Rs 187.29.

Tata Technologies declined as much as 2.73 per cent to Rs 738. Indian Hotels Company fell 0.56 per cent to Rs 722.60, while Tata Consumer Products slipped 0.42 per cent to Rs 1,009.40.

The Nifty India Corporate Group Index – Tata Group 25 per cent Cap also fell 1.14 per cent to an intraday low of 13,855.45 from its previous close of 14,015.75. It was last trading more than 1 per cent lower at 13,867.70.

The selling came a day after Tata Sons said Chandrasekaran had agreed to reconsider his earlier decision not to seek another term. The Tata Sons board subsequently voted by a majority to reappoint him as executive chairman for another five years after the expiry of his current tenure.

The decision has triggered a public disagreement with Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata. Tata Trusts said it considers the reappointment resolution a “legal nullity”, maintaining that Chandrasekaran’s earlier decision not to seek another term had been accepted and had attained finality. Noel Tata voted against the reappointment at the board meeting.

Tata Trusts also said its position was based on the Articles of Association of Tata Sons and that a legal opinion obtained from former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud was submitted to the board.

The developments have added uncertainty around the leadership of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, as the disagreement between the board and Tata Trusts unfolds.
