The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sent a legal notice to the producers of Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ film, which misrepresents the character and history of Sikhs, and asked them to remove the objectionable scenes presenting anti-Sikh sentiments.
In the notice sent by Advocate Amanbir Singh Siali, legal adviser of SGPC, the producers of the film, including Kangana Ranaut, have been asked to remove the trailer released on August 14, 2024, from public and social media platforms and seek a written apology from the Sikh community.
Sharing information, SGPC Secretary Partap Singh said that as soon as the matter of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency film came to the notice, the Sikh body SGPC started action against it representing the Sikh sentiments.
He said that while expressing strong objection to this film, separate letters were written to the Government of India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Central Board of Film Certification’s Chairperson Shri Prasoon Joshi to ban this film.
Partap Singh said that as per the directions of the SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, a legal notice has been sent to the producers of this film including Kangana Ranaut.
He said that after the release of the trailer of the Emergency film, many anti-Sikh scenes had come to light, which have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community.
In the film, the character of Sikhs including the great martyr of the June 1984 massacre, Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, an attempt has been made to show Sikhs as terrorists and separatists, which is unacceptable and far from the truth.
Partap Singh said that there is huge resentment in the Sikh community since the trailer of this film was released, due to which legal action has been initiated by the SGPC.
He said that if the objectionable anti-Sikh scenes are not removed from the film by Kangana Ranaut and the filmmakers, then legal action will be taken against them at all levels along with strong opposition.
