Sahitya Akademi Delhi, in collaboration with the Dept of Languages, organizes seminar on ‘Relevance of World Literature’

Patiala, 11 September, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

There is no language in the world that the entire world can read, write, and speak, but masterpieces from around the world can reach every corner of the globe only through translation.

These views were expressed by eminent translator and writer Jang Bahadur Goyal as the keynote speaker during a seminar on the topic ‘Relevance of World Literature’ organized by Sahitya Akademi Delhi in collaboration with the Department of Languages.

The seminar, organized under the leadership of eminent novelist and ghazalgo Buta Singh Chauhan, was presided over by Director of the Language Department, S. Jaswant Singh Zafar and eminent critic Dr. Labh Singh Khiva was present as the special guest.

Mr. Jang Bahadur Goyal said in his address that world literature makes the reader a global citizen because this literature makes the reader aware of the culture, civilization and environment of every corner of the world. World literature is a platform that transcends all religions, classes and ideologies and creates a common human thought.

He said that this literature creates parallel worlds. The characters of literature always accompany man and encourage him to overcome the difficult valleys of life. That is why world literature is considered the heritage of the entire world.

He expressed regret and said that there are many such atrocities in our history about which we have not been able to write any masterpiece in Punjabi. He appreciated the work done by the Language Department and Jang Bahadur Goyal in the field of translation. In his presidential address, S. Jaswant Singh Zafar said that Mr. Jang Bahadur Goyal has simplified the language during the translation work.

That is why the world literature translated by him has become popular. He said that a writer is a user of language and a translator is a servant of two languages. He said that world-class literature has been created in our region too, but we have limited it to ourselves by binding it with religious and other restrictions.

He said that dates, places and names in literature may be wrong, but the truths recorded in literature cannot be falsified. On this occasion, Dr. Lakshmi Narayan Bhikhi, Avtarjit, Inderpal Singh, Dharam Kameana, former police officer Sukhdev Singh Virk interacted with Jang Bahadur Goyal and made the event multifaceted.

The stage was moderated by Research Officer Dr. Sukhdarshan Singh Chahal. Finally, the moderator of the event, Buta Singh Chauhan, thanked everyone and told about the activities and achievements of the Sahitya Akademi.

On this occasion, Assistant Director of the Language Department Jaspreet Kaur, Surinder Kaur, Research Officers Dr. Santokh Sukhi and Satpal Singh, Shiromani poet Balwinder Sandhu, Paramjit Mann, Lachhman Das, Raman Sandhu, Gurcharan Pabrali, poets Navdeep Mundi, Gopal Sharma, Harpreet Sandhu and a large number of literature lovers were present.
