Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) was, is, and will always remain champion of Panthic unity: Wadala

Chandigarh, May 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), which was revived on December 2, 2024, according to the orders of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, is the party of the Panth, and from the beginning its purpose has been that taking the entire Panth along, a collective struggle should be fought on religious, social and political issues.

For the fulfilment of this sacred mission, we are ready to unite with every faction that carries within itself the pain of the Panth. These views were expressed by S. Gurpratap Singh Wadala, member of the Coordination Committee constituted by Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) and the party’s Secretary General, in a written press statement.

He said that Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) is fully committed to Panthic unity and is ready to take every possible step to achieve it. But genuine unity cannot be created through unilateral decisions, public posturing, or the expectation that experienced Panthic factions should merely endorse a pre‑decided agenda.

Serious Panthic unity requires maturity, consultation, and respect for collective leadership.

S. Wadala said that regarding the unilateral announcement made recently by “Akali Dal Waris Punjab De” to break the alliance that was being formed for unity, we wish to bring some important facts to the attention of the Sangat. The initiative for an alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) was taken by “Akali Dal Waris Punjab De” itself.

We sincerely welcomed this initiative to form an alliance on a shared agenda for the betterment of the Panth and Punjab, and for this purpose we had constituted a four‑member committee.

The meetings of the committee were held in a cordial atmosphere, a convenor was chosen by mutual consent, and positive discussions on several issues also moved forward.

The important thing is that in the initial meetings regarding the alliance, no objection was raised about the leadership of Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), nor was any discussion held on this matter – which is now being mentioned.

When the initiative for the alliance was taken, this same leadership was part of the party then, and is still today. We say with pride that this is the leadership which, by presenting itself before Sri Akal Takht Sahib, bowed its head unconditionally according to Panthic traditions, sought forgiveness, and completed the religious penance (tankhah) imposed by Akal Takht Sahib.

Our clear belief is that when a person admits his mistakes before Sri Akal Takht Sahib and suffers the punishment, it is not right to repeatedly taunt him.

Therefore, the unilateral announcement of breaking the alliance without any clarity is painful not only for us but for every Sikh who feels the pain of the Panth.

It is also noteworthy that the very December 2 Hukamnama, on the basis of which questions are being raised today about the leadership of Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), in that very decision Sri Akal Takht Sahib had called upon all Akali factions to gather their respective factions together and unite, in order to consolidate the scattered political power of the Sikhs.

Despite this, within a few days a new political party – “Akali Dal Waris Punjab De” – was formed. Even then, we welcome every sincere faction for Panthic unity and for coming together, and we shall always remain committed to this.

We appeal to all Panthic factions and the Sangat that when attempts are being made to weaken the regional and Panthic politics of the Sikhs from the Punjab region, at such a time we must rise above petty differences and take guidance from Gurbani and Sikh history.

Like during the Misal period, when external forces are trying to dominate our region, we need to consolidate our political power rather than divide it.

S. Wadala said that Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) will always continue to make individual efforts to bring together all Panthic factions. Our doors are always open for this unity, provided that the terms of the alliance are based on the interests of the Panth and Punjab, not on personal interests.

He said that Punjab has already paid a very heavy price for personality‑centric and dictatorial politics. Because Akali politics collapsed when internal democracy was replaced by centralised authority and workers were reduced to mute spectators.

Repackaging the same tactics under new names cannot be a new alternative for Punjab. The statement further said that any movement connected to the Panth must be accountable to the Sangat and must function from the bottom upward. B

ut when Panthic politics becomes centred around individuals instead of institutions, it falls prey to pressure, manipulation and compromise politics. Governments may target individuals, but they cannot suppress an organised, Sangat‑based movement. Therefore, we are always ready with an open heart for harmony and togetherness with all Panthic factions.
