Raja Raghuvanshi murder case: Meghalaya Police to challenge bail granted to Sonam

Shillong, June 19, 2026

Meghalaya Police will challenge the court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband, Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters here, Nongrang confirmed that the state police have initiated steps to contest the bail order before a higher court.

“We are challenging the court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi,” the DGP said, reiterating the department’s commitment to pursuing the case vigorously.

Responding to questions regarding alleged procedural lapses during the investigation, Nongrang defended the investigating officers (IOs), saying that minor errors should be viewed in the context of the complexity of the case.

She noted that the investigation involved multiple accused and several legal procedures, making it a challenging exercise for the officers handling the matter.

“You have to allow a certain amount of leeway to investigating officers, especially in a case involving several individuals. The issue being raised pertains to only one document where a particular legal section was incorrectly mentioned,” Nongrang said.

The DGP clarified that the transit remand proceedings had cited the appropriate legal provisions and that the discrepancy was limited to a single document in which the section was inadvertently misquoted.

According to Nongrang, the error was technical in nature and did not have any bearing on the substantive aspects of the investigation or the prosecution’s case against the accused.

She maintained that the overall legal process had been followed correctly and that the alleged lapse did not compromise the integrity of the probe.

The high-profile murder case has attracted significant public attention, with Meghalaya Police carrying out an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Raja Raghuvanshi’s death.

Authorities have repeatedly asserted that they possess substantial evidence and remain confident about the strength of the case as it proceeds through the judicial process.(Agency)
