Punjab Police Raids Bikram Majithia’s Residence; Akali Leader Faces Arrest in Majitha Police Station Incident

Amritsar, June 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News):
A major political and legal controversy unfolded in Punjab on Monday after a large contingent of Punjab Police conducted a raid at the Amritsar residence of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a case related to an alleged attack on Majitha police station and the forcible attempt to get a detainee released from police custody.

Police officials confirmed that teams had reached Majithia’s residence to arrest him and other accused persons named in the FIR. However, the police party returned without making any arrest as Majithia was reportedly not present at his residence during the operation.

According to police sources, an FIR has been registered against Majithia and several others over allegations that a group led by him stormed Majitha police station on Sunday and forcibly tried to secure the release of Jobanjit Singh, who had been detained by the police earlier in the day.

Jobanjit Singh is stated to be associated with the Kirti Kisan Union and had reportedly served as a polling agent of the Shiromani Akali Dal during the recently held municipal elections.

The controversy began after Jobanjit Singh was allegedly brought to the police station on Sunday morning. Following his detention, members of the Kirti Kisan Union staged a protest outside the police station. Later, Bikram Majithia along with his supporters also reached the police station and allegedly confronted police officials.

Police alleged that the crowd entered the police station premises and forcibly tried to free the detainee from police custody, triggering serious security concerns and prompting a high-level review by senior officers.

However, Majithia has denied the allegations of attempt to free the detainee from lock-up custody. He claimed that Jobanjit Singh was not in the lock-up and was instead rescued from the room of the Station House Officer (SHO).

Speaking to media persons outside Majithia’s residence, SP Aditya Warrier confirmed that the police had come to arrest Majithia and other accused persons in connection with the case.

Police sources said that as many as 12 special teams have been constituted to trace and arrest all individuals named in the FIR. Raids are reportedly being conducted at multiple locations across the region.

Investigators are also examining CCTV footage, digital evidence and other material collected from the police station and surrounding areas as part of the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, Majithia’s counsel Damanbir Singh Sobti claimed that the legal team had not yet been provided a copy of the FIR. He said representations had been made to Amritsar SSP seeking details of the case.

“We do not yet know whether Bikram Majithia has formally been named in the FIR, under which sections the case has been registered, or what specific offences have been alleged. The police are required to disclose the grounds of arrest,” Sobti said.

The lawyer further reiterated Majithia’s stand that the detainee was not released from police lock-up custody but was found inside the SHO’s room.

Sobti also stated that he was unaware of Majithia’s current whereabouts.

The police action comes amid heightened political tensions in Punjab following the recently concluded civic body elections. Akali leaders and members of the Kirti Kisan Union have alleged that Jobanjit Singh was detained in a fabricated case due to political vendetta linked to his role as an SAD polling agent during the municipal polls.

Senior police officials, including Amritsar SSP Sohail Qasim Mir, are expected to brief the media regarding further developments in the case.

As of now, it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made among the other persons named in the FIR.
