Anup Jalota on balancing creative freedom and cultural sensitivity

Mumbai, June 28, 2026

Amidst the ongoing debate regarding derogatory content being passed on in the name of comedy, singer Anup Jalota talked about balancing creative freedom and cultural sensitivity.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, Anup Jalota said that it is important to present content with respect and sincerity.

He went on to add that when the intentions are pure, there is very little chance that we end up hurting anyone.

He was asked, “There has been considerable debate around comedy and entertainment content in recent times. How can creative freedom and cultural sensitivity be balanced?”

To this, Anup Jalota replied, “The balance is not difficult to maintain. We should always present content with sincerity and respect. When intentions are pure, there is little risk of hurting anyone’s sentiments.”

Recently, the ‘₹370 biryani’ remake made during comedian Pranit More’s show ignited a massive debate on social media on what kind of content should be passed on in the name of comedy.

Sharing his views on the same, comedian and actor Sunil Pal said that such people running their homes by sharing such obscene content are the “terrorists of society”.

The comedian told IANS, “The obscenity these boys and girls try to do in the name of comedy ends up running their homes, but it is ruining the youth of the country. That’s why I always call such people the terrorists of society, because I believe what is not understood does not belong to society.”

He further went on to demand that the venues hosting comedy shows come up with strict laws, ensuring that only clean content is delivered.

“Those venues hosting such shows also need to come up with strict laws and rules that no such program will happen here, no abuses will be given, no obscene content will be used and only then I feel that a little bit of control can be achieved on this because today society, and comedians like us and the people who watch our content, are scared, and in a panic,” he added.(Agency)
