Afghanistan Earthquake of Magnitude 6.2 Sends Tremors Across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and J&K

Strong earthquake tremors were felt across large parts of North India, including Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi-NCR, on Saturday evening after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

Residents in several cities, including Jalandhar, Chandigarh and other parts of Punjab, experienced noticeable shaking at around 7:08 pm, prompting many people to rush out of their homes, offices and commercial establishments as a precaution.

According to the NCS, the earthquake originated at 7:04:51 pm (IST) with its epicentre located in Afghanistan at 36.442°N latitude and 70.672°E longitude. The earthquake struck at a depth of 215 kilometres, and the event has been classified as ‘Reviewed’ by the agency.

The NCS said the epicentre was located about 248 km north-northeast of Kabul288 km southeast of Dushanbe (Tajikistan)375 km northwest of Islamabad (Pakistan)429 km northwest of Gulmarg and 457 km northwest of Srinagar.

The considerable depth of the earthquake allowed seismic waves to travel across a vast geographical area, resulting in tremors being felt across several northern Indian states despite the epicentre being hundreds of kilometres away in Afghanistan.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage were available from Punjab or other parts of North India till the filing of this report. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
