Bengal: Govt libraries to remove Mamata’s books, add works on Syama Prasad Mookerjee

olkata, June 11, 2026
Newly appointed state Public Education and Library Minister Gouri Shankar Ghosh on Thursday said that frivolous books written by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will no longer be kept in government libraries.

Such libraries used to have various books by Mamata Banerjee, which, according to the minister, were not serious and contained meaningless poems. After the change of power in the state, the layout of libraries is changing. Instead, there will be books about the nationalist spirit.

Public Education and Library Minister Gouri Shankar Ghosh said: “There has been an attempt to make Syama Prasad Mookerjee forget. His contribution cannot be forgotten. Therefore, his books and books on him will be kept. Along with this, there has been an attempt to make Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee forget. In fact, the previous government was running with a dictatorial mentality. Its own laws were applicable.”

He further said: “There will be no unnecessary books written by Mamata Banerjee like Epang-Opang-Jhpang in the library. Books written by the former Chief Minister that will not help students gain knowledge will be removed from the library. Libraries will be modernised. There will be books on nationalism, statehood, modern science and Bengali scholars.” The minister also said that an e-library will be set up using digital technology.

A few days ago, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Samik Bhattacharya alleged that distorted history is being taught in school textbooks, omitting India’s glorious past. Not only Bhattacharya, but also Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various leaders have spoken on several occasions about changing the country’s distorted history. Nationalism has also been mentioned. The glorious history of traditional India, Vedic science and culture have also been mentioned.

Even the freedom struggle has been repeatedly highlighted in the speeches of various leaders, including the Prime Minister. In this situation, the BJP believes that fundamental changes are needed in several areas, including Bengal’s education policy, curriculum and the overall quality of the education system.(Agency)
