Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla visited the long-shut Community Hall in New Amritsar and expressed concern over its deteriorating condition. He appealed to Improvement Trust Chairman Karamjit Singh Rintu to open the hall immediately and hand it over for public use.
Aujla said he had come to the area to express condolences over the demise of a Congress worker, during which local residents informed him about the community hall lying closed for years. Inspecting the site, he said the hall had been completed during the previous government’s tenure but remained locked due to certain vigilance proceedings.
He said vigilance action may be against individuals, but public property should not suffer because of it. He added that a building constructed from taxpayers’ money is now turning into a hideout for thieves and drug addicts, which is unfortunate.
Aujla warned that if the building is not opened soon, its condition will worsen further. Water seepage and lack of maintenance could cause serious damage to the structure, he said. He urged the administration to dedicate the community hall to the public at the earliest so it can be used for social and community functions in the area.
Demanding immediate action from the administration, Aujla said buildings created for public welfare should not remain locked but should be put to use for the benefit of the people.
