President Misl Satluj Jethebandhi Ajay Pal Singh Brar today expressed serious concern over the Maharashtra government’s approval to introduce a new law by amending the nearly 70-year-old legislation governing the administration of Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, abchal nagar, Nanded.
Brar stated that under the proposed law, the Maharashtra government will nominate 12 members of the 17-member governing board, while the representation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee will be reduced from four members to just two.
In addition, the roles of the Chief Khalsa Diwan and the Hazuri Sachkhand Diwan have been completely eliminated, and the reserved seats for sikh members of Parliament have also been abolished.
He said these changes cannot be justified in the name of transparency or reform. Rather, they represent a well-planned attempt to take the administration of one of the sikh community’s five Takhts away from the Sikh Sangat and place it under government control.
Brar emphasized that sikh institutions and gurdwaras should be managed in accordance with sikh religious traditions and established codes of conduct (Maryada). He asserted that no government should have the authority to interfere in the religious affairs of the sikh community. He appealed to both the Central government and the Maharashtra Government to respect sikh sentiments and reconsider this decision.
Ajay Pal Singh Brar warned that if attempts to undermine the autonomy of sikh religious institutions continue, the sikh community will strongly oppose them through democratic and constitutional means. He added that Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib is not merely a religious shrine but a symbol of sikh history, faith, and pride, and any attempt by the government to take control of its administration will never be accepted.
