In a major relief for students and parents across the state, the Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday approved an ordinance to regulate fee hikes by private unaided schools and cap annual fee increases at five percent.
The Cabinet gave its nod to the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 by amending the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions Act, 2016.
The move aims to prevent arbitrary and unreasonable fee hikes, ensure transparency and accountability in school fee structures, and safeguard the interests of students and parents.
As per the proposed amendments, annual fee hikes by private unaided schools will be limited to five percent. Any increase beyond this limit will require prior approval from the designated regulatory authority.
The amendments also seek to bring greater clarity to the definitions of fee, fee enhancement and cumulative fee enhancement, thereby strengthening the regulatory framework governing private educational institutions.
