Amritsar, April 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Launching a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla stated that the BJP is merely creating confusion among the women of the country on this issue.
He alleged that the government’s true intention is not to grant rights to women, but rather to reap political dividends from this issue with an eye on the upcoming elections.
Addressing a press conference held at Congress Bhawan—located at Hall Gate, Amritsar—and presided over by District Urban President Saurav Mittu Madan, MP Aujla asserted that the Congress party has always been a staunch proponent of women’s political participation and empowerment.
He recalled that when this bill was introduced in Parliament in 2023, the Congress party had supported it without any delay and had demanded its immediate implementation. Women’s Wing President Rajni Sharma was also present on this occasion.
The Census and Delimitation Hurdle: Aujla remarked that the central government has entangled this bill in a protracted process by linking it to the census and delimitation exercises. He questioned the feasibility of the move, arguing that implementing the bill without a fresh census is practically impossible.
Objection to Using Old Census Data: He argued that if seats were to be allocated based on the 2011 census, it would fail to do justice to the current social and demographic realities of the country.
Demand for a Caste Census: The MP emphasized that reservation should be implemented based on a new ‘Caste Census’ to ensure that women from every section and community of society receive proportionate representation relative to their population size.
Politics of Distraction: Taking aim at the Centre, Aujla alleged that the BJP government is resorting to such tactics solely to divert the public’s attention away from pressing real issues, such as unemployment, crippling inflation, and a failed foreign policy
A Threat to Democracy
Aujla warned that if any hasty steps are taken without adhering to constitutional procedures and relying on accurate data, it could pose a grave threat to the country’s democratic framework. She clarified that the Congress party would continue its struggle to protect the Constitution and uphold the dignity of women.
She stated that she was extremely pleased to have broken a link in the Central Government’s dictatorial approach. She added that she is by no means opposed to the Women’s Reservation Bill itself, but rather opposes the increase in seats without a census.
