The Bihar State Women’s Commission has issued a notice to Purnea Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, after a video purportedly showing him making derogatory remarks against women went viral on social media.
The notice was issued by the office of the Commission Chairperson, Apshara, who took suo motu cognisance of the matter.
The Commission stated that the remarks attributed to the MP were objectionable, indecent, and against the dignity of women.
According to the notice, the viral video allegedly shows Yadav making a controversial statement about women in politics, suggesting that their participation is linked to inappropriate conduct.
The Commission said such remarks hurt the self-respect and social standing of women engaged in public life.
“A video circulated through social media shows a hateful statement made by you regarding women working in the political field. It suggests that women in politics advance by inappropriate means, which deeply hurts their dignity and social prestige,” the notice stated.
Taking the issue seriously, the Commission has sought an explanation from the MP within three days of receiving the notice.
It also warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response could lead to a recommendation to the Lok Sabha Speaker for appropriate action, including the possibility of cancellation of his membership.
The Commission emphasised that such statements are unacceptable and undermine the dignity and contribution of women in politics.
Meanwhile, Pappu Yadav has issued a strong response to the notice served by the Bihar State Commission for Women, asserting that his statement had been misrepresented and taken out of context.
Clarifying his position, Yadav said that his remarks were not directed against women but were intended to highlight the alleged exploitation faced by women in politics.
He maintained that he has consistently raised his voice against crimes targeting women and questioned the Commission’s role in addressing such issues.
He stated that he had raised the matter in the House as well, citing government data, media reports, and references to statements made by leaders such as Subramanian Swamy and Madhu.
According to him, the issue of the exploitation of women in politics has been discussed on several platforms, but his remarks were selectively presented to create controversy.
Questioning the Commission’s actions, Yadav referred to several incidents in Bihar, including the alleged rape and murder of a NEET student in Patna and an attempted public assault in Nalanda.
He asked what steps had been taken in these cases and whether the Commission had effectively intervened in crimes reported from districts such as Saharsa, Purnea, and Muzaffarpur.
He further criticised what he described as selective action, asking why a notice was issued promptly in his case while, according to him, similar matters did not receive comparable attention.
Yadav also raised concerns over past cases, including the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, questioning the Commission’s role.
Referring to the broader issue of women’s safety, Yadav said that crimes against women remain a serious concern and require comprehensive discussion and action at all levels.
He also mentioned incidents reported from other parts of the country, including Manipur and educational institutions, stressing the need for equal seriousness in addressing such cases.
The MP also questioned sections of the media, alleging that his statement was reported selectively without full context.
He urged that the complete video of his remarks be reviewed to understand his intent.
Yadav said he is willing to face any inquiry and stands by his statement, while reiterating that his intention was to advocate for the protection of women’s rights and dignity.
He added that if his remarks unintentionally hurt sentiments, he regrets it, but emphasised that his broader struggle has always been for the rights of women, youth, and vulnerable sections.(Agency)
