Raj Singh, who was released by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after being arrested in connection with the murder of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s Personal Assistant Chandranath Rath, on Thursday praised the central agency for its “impartial probe” in the case. However, he blamed the police and the administration for his “wrongful arrest”.
Speaking to IANS, Raj Singh said: “I was falsely arrested in this case. I had no involvement in the matter. I was wrongfully arrested by the Ayodhya Special Operations Group (SOG) and was mentally harassed there. They were pressuring me to confess to a crime.”
He said that the truth has emerged victorious, while reiterating: “I have not committed any crime.”
Singh added that during the interrogation, he refused having any involvement in the crime.
“I presented evidence and hence was proved innocent,” he added.
Highlighting that the CBI gets to the root of a case, he mentioned: “I provided them the details of my whereabouts when the crime took place, saying when I was not present at the spot at that time, how could I be involved in the murder.”
Singh asserted that CBI has conducted an “impartial probe” into the case. “I thank the CBI for that,” he said.
He alleged that there has been negligence on part of the SOG and the administration and that he was “framed” for the crime which he did not commit.
“It is really shameful that we live in such a country where the administration considers an innocent as guilty,” he said.
Moreover, Raj Singh identified himself as a BJP leader saying: “Since my name is popular, I could be easily framed into this.”
He further claimed that his image has been “tarnished”.
“I am a political leader who works for the public and has got nothing to do with any kind of criminal activities,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the CBI on Tuesday arrested the fifth accused in connection with the murder case of Chandranath Rath from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, central agency officials confirmed.
Officials said the accused has been identified as 40-year-old Vinay Rai alias Pumpum Rai, originally hailing from the Zamani area of Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur.(Agency)
