BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh today welcomed the Election Commission of India’s decision to conduct the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 16 states and 3 Union Territories, including Punjab.
He described the exercise as a constitutional, transparent and democratic process aimed at ensuring that every genuine voter’s name is included in the electoral rolls while fake, duplicate, deceased and infiltrator entries are removed. Chugh asserted that the purification of voter lists is not the agenda of any political party — it is the very foundation of democracy’s credibility and integrity.
Launching a sharp attack on Congress and AAP, Tarun Chugh said that the opposition’s protest against SIR in Punjab is nothing but rank hypocrisy and deliberate falsehood. He reminded that since Independence, the SIR process has been conducted 13 times in India — and on every single occasion, it was carried out under Congress rule at the Centre.
He said it is deeply ironic that a process which was perfectly acceptable to Congress for decades is now being painted as “dangerous” simply because they fear electoral defeat in Punjab.
Tarun Chugh said the entire country wants to know why Congress and AAP are so troubled by a legitimate and transparent voter verification exercise.
He questioned whether their opposition stems from the frustration of impending defeat, political desperation, or simply a deep attachment to fake and bogus voters. He said that those opposing voter verification must answer to the public — why do they fear transparency and cleanliness in the electoral process? Free and fair elections are possible only when the voter list is pure, and opposing this purification is nothing short of an insult to democracy.
Chugh made it clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party, as a responsible and nationalist political force, has always participated in the SIR process and will continue to do so actively and sincerely.
He appealed to all political parties to support this democratic exercise and ensure that every booth-level process is conducted honestly so that the voter list remains credible, clean and free from bogus entries. A strong democracy begins with an honest electoral roll, and the BJP stands fully committed to that ideal.
