Withdraw cap limiting compensation for crop damage to five acres per farmer: Sukhbir Badal

Chandigarh, September 18, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today appealed to the Punjab government to withdraw the cap limiting compensation for crop damage to five acres per farmer.

In a statement here, the SAD president said it was shocking that a chief minister who had earlier promised compensation for loss of even goats and hens, was now going to leave farmers in the lurch by restricting the meagre compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre announced by him to five acres per farmer only.

Asserting that an agrarian crisis would be created in the State if farmers were denied a fair compensation, Mr Sukhbir Badal said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government must immediately announce a compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre for all crop damaged in the recent devastating floods in the State.

Terming the flooding of the State as a “Mann- made” tragedy, Mr Badal said “the chief minister and his government failed Punjabis at every step be it cleaning drains and strengthening bundhs before the monsoon rains or providing timely relief to flood struck farmers. “Now even the compensation is being delayed inordinately”, he asserted.

Mr Badal also called for releasing the Rs 12,000 crore State Disaster Response Fund available in its treasury.

“There can be no excuse for not releasing this money unless it had been misused for which Punjabis should not be made victims. He demanded the government provide adequate compensation to farmers for crop damages as well as agricultural laborers facing loss of livelihood and for livestock deaths and house repairs.
