Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday clarified that no writ petition had been filed before the Supreme Court regarding the alleged police action against students during the recent ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, dismissing media reports that claimed the apex court had refused to hear the matter.
Making the clarification in open court, CJI Surya Kant said reports suggesting that he had declined to list the case were “completely false”, explaining that only a letter representation had been received and not a formal writ petition.
The Chief Justice said he had verified the position with the Supreme Court Registry before making the statement, adding that not a single petition had been filed till Friday morning. He observed that a representation could not be treated as a writ petition and criticised what he described as reckless and inaccurate media reporting.
The clarification comes days after advocate Narendra Mishra submitted a representation seeking the Supreme Court’s suo motu intervention over the alleged use of force by Delhi Police against students protesting the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and demanding reforms in the examination system.
Earlier this week, when the issue was mentioned before a Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant, the court declined an urgent hearing. During the proceedings, the Bench also said it was not inclined to examine videos purportedly showing police action against protesters while considering the request for urgent listing.
According to the representation, the petitioner sought an investigation into allegations that unidentified persons in civilian clothes assaulted peaceful protesters in the presence of police personnel. It also requested preservation of electronic evidence, including drone footage, body-camera recordings, wireless logs and social media videos related to the incident.
