Bihar: Three teenagers drown in Buxar River

Patna, June 18, 2026
A tragic incident in Bihar’s Buxar district claimed the lives of three teenagers who drowned while bathing in the Thora River in Sarasati village under the Itarhi police station area on Thursday.

The incident has plunged the village into mourning, with grieving families and residents gathering at the hospital and the victims’ homes.

The deceased have been identified as Samar Kumar Sharma (13), son of Ratnesh Kumar Sharma; Krishna Ram (15), son of Surendra Ram; and Dharmveer Kumar (14), son of Dharmendra Yadav. All three were residents of Sarasati village.

According to local residents, four friends had gone to the Thora River to escape the intense summer heat. The boys reportedly left home without informing their families.

While Samar, Krishna and Dharmveer entered the river to bathe, their friend Kalyan Sharma remained on the bank and began recording a video on his mobile phone.

What started as a routine outing quickly turned tragic when the three boys ventured into deeper water and began struggling. At first, Kalyan believed they were simply playing in the river. However, within moments, the situation became critical as the boys started drowning.

Kalyan said he was recording a video while they were bathing when suddenly they started drowning. He added that he did not know how to swim and could not help them, so he ran to the village to call people for assistance.

After being alerted, villagers and local divers rushed to the river and launched a rescue operation. Following considerable effort, the three boys were pulled from the water and taken to Sadar Hospital. Doctors, however, declared all three dead upon arrival.

The tragedy has deeply affected the village. Samar Kumar Sharma was a Class 6 student and the elder of two brothers. Krishna Ram was in Class 9 and the youngest of five brothers. Dharmveer Kumar was also a Class 9 student.

The deaths of the three teenagers have left their families devastated and triggered scenes of grief throughout the village.

Sonu Kumar, the SHO of Itarhi police station, confirmed that the children died due to drowning while bathing in the river. He said all three bodies had been recovered and, after doctors confirmed their deaths, the post-mortem process was initiated.

Police have taken custody of the bodies and begun further legal proceedings.(Agency)
