Delhi Akali chief Paramjit Singh Sarna has called on the Central Government to publish a White Paper on police atrocities committed during the nearly 15-year period of militancy and counter-insurgency in Punjab, saying the truth must be officially documented to ensure justice and prevent history from being forgotten.
Sarna made the demand after his Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal organised a special screening of Satluj, the film based on the life and work of human rights activist Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra. The screening drew a large gathering of Sikh and non-Sikh viewers.
Sarna said Bhai Khalra’s work in documenting enforced disappearances and alleged illegal cremations remains one of the most significant chapters in the struggle for truth and accountability in Punjab. He said the country owes it to the victims and their families to place an official account of the excesses committed during the years of unrest before the public.
“The government should issue a White Paper detailing the police atrocities committed during the prolonged period of unrest in Punjab. A transparent and documented account is essential to acknowledge the suffering of thousands of families and to strengthen public faith in the rule of law,” Sarna said.
He added that remembering Bhai Khalra’s sacrifice was not merely about honouring an individual but about reaffirming the principles of justice, human rights and accountability.
Senior Akali leader Manjit Singh GK was also present at the screening and paid tribute to Bhai Khalra.
The event concluded with the party reiterating its commitment to pursuing justice for victims of the Punjab conflict and preserving the memory of those who fought to uncover the truth.
