Police files supplementary chargesheet against 24 accused of killing minor girl in 2025 poll violence in Bengal’s Kaliganj

Kolkata, July 22, 2026
Krishnanagar District Police in Nadia district of West Bengal on Wednesday filed a supplementary chargesheet against 24 individuals accused for the killing of a minor girl Tamanna Khatun at Kaliganj in the same district in June last year.

Tamanna Khatun, who belonged to a family of CPI-M supporters, was killed in a crude bomb blast on June 23 last year.

On that day, the result of the bypolls for Kaliganj Assembly constituency in the district had been announced, which marked a landslide victory for the then Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed.

Khatun was a school girl from Molandi village in Kaliganj of West Bengal’s Nadia district.

Several Trinamool Congress activists reportedly hurled crude bombs at the residence of the minor girl during a victory procession, killing Tamanna on the spot.

An official from the Krishnanagar District Police said that in the previous chargesheet filed during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, provisions under Arms Act were not included, which had been included in the supplementary chargesheet at a district court in Nadia on Wednesday.

The family members of the deceased minor girl have expressed over the new development and claimed that the prompt actions taken by the police in matter had been after the Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met Tamanna’s mother Sabina Iyasmin Sheikh last month and assured her of all possible actions to ensure justice for her deceased daughter.

Recently, the state government had appointed Bivas Chattopadhyay as the public prosecutor in the matter because of his excellent track records for ensuring speedy conviction in such cases.

Of the 24 accused in the case, 23 are currently in judicial custody and one is out on bail granted to him by the Calcutta High Court.

All the 24 accused individuals in the case are active Trinamool Congress workers in the area where the mishap took place last year.

Tamanna’s mother Sabina Iyasmin Sheikh contested as a CPI-M candidate from Kaliganj in the recently-concluded West Bengal Assembly polls, but was defeated by Trinamool Congress’ Alifa Ahmed, who got elected for the second consecutive term.(Agency)
