Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday extended support to education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is leading a protest at Jantar Mantar against alleged examination paper leaks, and demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Addressing protesters at the demonstration, Kejriwal urged the Central Government to listen to the concerns of students and young people, saying repeated examination paper leaks have severely undermined the future of the country’s youth.
“Every year, examination papers are leaked and it is the students who suffer. I appeal to the government to listen to the voice of the youth and to Sonam Wangchuk,” Kejriwal said.
He alleged that repeated irregularities in competitive examinations had eroded confidence in the education system and asserted that accountability must be fixed.
Taking a swipe at the Union Government, the former Delhi Chief Minister demanded that Dharmendra Pradhan resign as Union Education Minister. He also remarked that Sonam Wangchuk should instead be entrusted with the country’s education portfolio, praising the activist’s commitment to educational reforms.
Recalling the anti-corruption movement of 2011, Kejriwal said his visit to Jantar Mantar reminded him of the protest he had joined alongside social activist Anna Hazare on April 4, 2011.
He said that movement ultimately resulted in political change because the government of the day failed to respond to public concerns and allowed arrogance to prevail over accountability.
Kejriwal said students and young people from different parts of the country had gathered to seek transparency and reforms in the examination system, describing their participation as a reflection of growing public concern over repeated paper leak controversies.
Praising Wangchuk, he said the activist was not fighting for personal interests but for students, children and the future of the country’s education system.
Referring to Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike, Kejriwal said he had risked his own health and life for the cause and expressed solidarity with all those participating in the movement, including individuals who, according to him, had faced hardships while raising the issue.
