Woman assaulted in Ujjain; 11 booked, three held

Ujjain, July 2, 2026
A woman was allegedly assaulted in a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district, police said on Thursday. Three accused have been arrested, while raids are underway to trace eight others, police told IANS.

According to police, the incident took place on June 30 in Arniya Vena village under the Jharda police station limits. A case has been registered against 11 people, including three women, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said the woman alleged that she was inside a room at her in-laws’ house around at 9 a.m. on June 30 when Sumer Singh, Kachru Singh, Badrilal and several others allegedly broke open the door and entered the house. They allegedly dragged her out by her hair and arms to a place where other members of the family, including three women, were present.

According to the complaint, the accused then cut off her hair, tore her clothes and allegedly forced her to wear a garland made of shoes and slippers before parading her through the village. The woman alleged that she was left half-naked during the incident. Her husband was also allegedly assaulted.

According to police, the woman further alleged that she and her husband were beaten and threatened with death. Police said she suffered injuries to her eye, cheek, head and abdomen, while her husband sustained injuries to his face, chest and abdomen.

During the investigation, police found that the woman had earlier been married in the same village. In 2023, she left her first husband and married another man from the village. The couple later shifted to Indore.

Police said the woman had returned to her in-laws’ house on June 30 seeking a share in the family property. An argument over the issue allegedly escalated into the assault.

Jharda Police Station in-charge Anand Bhabor said three accused — Sumer Singh, Kachru Singh and Badrilal — have been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while police teams are conducting raids to arrest the remaining accused.

“Sumer Singh, Kachru Singh and Badrilal have been arrested and sent to jail. Continuous raids are being carried out to arrest the remaining accused. Further investigation is underway,” Bhabor told IANS.(Agency)
