Critically endangered gharial returns to Kaziranga National Park in major conservation milestone

Guwahati, May 10, 2026

Once feared to have vanished from Assam’s river systems, the critically endangered gharial has been sighted once again in Kaziranga National Park, marking a remarkable and encouraging moment for wildlife conservation in the region, officials said on Sunday.

The rare sighting has sparked hope among conservationists and wildlife experts, highlighting the success of ongoing efforts to restore and protect the state’s fragile riverine ecosystem.

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) Director Sonali Ghosh said that on April 26, a gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) was spotted basking on a sand bar near the Maite anti-poaching camp area of Burapahar Range of the park.

The sighting was reported by a team of Forest staff while on patrolling duty along the confluence of Difolu and Brahmaputra River, she said.

Experts say that river confluences and sandy banks are the preferred habitat of gharials for feeding, basking, and breeding.

Ghosh said that since then, more such sightings were reported with photographic proof from the same location in the following days. The last reported sighting was on May 8, from Burapahar Range by tourist guide Shishukanta Nath, which was widely welcomed on social media.

Assam Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), while taking to social media, posted: “Once believed to have disappeared from Assam’s river systems, the critically endangered gharial has now been spotted at Kaziranga, a truly remarkable moment for wildlife conservation.”

KNPTR Director said that for tourists and forest officials alike, this was more than just a rare sighting.

“It was a powerful reminder of Assam’s extraordinary biodiversity and the silent success of sustained conservation efforts across our forests, wetlands and rivers,” the senior Indian Forest Service officer said.

The gharial is a specialised, fish-eating reptile identifiable by its very long, thin snout. It is listed as critically endangered due to a historical 98 per cent population decline and an estimated 650-1,000 mature breeding individuals left in the wild, Ghosh said.

She informed that major remaining wild populations (gharial) and reintroduction sanctuaries are located near the National Chambal Sanctuary (Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh), Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (Uttar Pradesh), and the Gandak River (Bihar).

As an apex predator and keystone species, it acts as an indicator of river health, playing an essential role in regulating fish populations and keeping freshwater ecosystems balanced.

Their historical decline in Assam was largely driven by habitat degradation and changing river dynamics.

The KNPTR Director said that occasional sightings of gharial in the Brahmaputra were also reported historically from Dibru Soikhowa National Park, Manas National Park, and Dikhow and Subansiri river basins of Sibsagar and Lakhimpur districts of Assam.

She said that gharials historically inhabited the Brahmaputra River system in Northeast India, with records from the 1950s across sixteen rivers in the region. The species was considered locally extinct there after the 1950s due to habitat loss and other factors, though unconfirmed sightings were reported for single individuals occasionally.

Ghosh said that such sightings indicate a possible continuous presence of the reptile in Assam, although the species was thought to be locally extinct. The sightings are seen as a strong indicator of successful ecological preservation and long-term wetland conservation initiatives across Assam’s protected areas.

The official noted that recent surveys, conducted by Kaziranga Park Authority in collaboration with WII (Wildlife Institute of India), WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and TSAFI (Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India) including one in January 2026 along 160 km of the river, have documented the lone gharial female in the past few years alongside diverse aquatic life, prompting reintroduction proposals from sources like Chambal Conservation Breeding centre wherein Madhya Pradesh government has expressed its willingness to support with the same.

Conservation efforts highlight the Brahmaputra’s potential due to ample fish prey and low human disturbance in protected areas, the official said.

The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, India’s seventh UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its ‘Big Five’ wildlife species — greater one-horned rhinoceroses, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, buffaloes, and eastern swamp deer. Spread across the districts of Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Biswanath, it comprises three forest divisions — Eastern Assam Wildlife Division (Bokakhat), Biswanath Wildlife Division (Biswanath Chariali), and Nagaon Wildlife Division (Nagaon).(Agency)

‘State treasury not empty’: Stalin rebuts Vijay’s criticism of Tamil Nadu finances

MK Stalin TN CM

Chennai, May 10, 2026
A political war of words erupted in Tamil Nadu on Sunday after DMK President and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin strongly countered Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s remarks on the state’s financial condition, asserting that the treasury was stable and accusing the new government of attempting to create a misleading narrative.

Hours after Vijay assumed office and announced that his government would release a White Paper on the state’s finances, Stalin issued a detailed response on X, dismissing claims that the previous DMK regime had left behind an “empty treasury” and a crippling debt burden.

While congratulating the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief on becoming Chief Minister and welcoming the immediate announcements made by the new government, Stalin said the state’s financial position had already been transparently explained in the Budget presented earlier this year.

“Do not begin your tenure by claiming there is no money in the government treasury. Funds are available. What matters is the capability and determination to govern effectively,” he said.

The former Chief Minister also questioned Vijay over his election promises, pointing out that the TVK leader had made multiple welfare commitments despite being aware of the state’s fiscal status.

“We had clearly presented Tamil Nadu’s financial position in the February Budget. Didn’t you know this before making promises to the people? Do not attempt to mislead voters or divert attention,” Stalin remarked.

The DMK leader further defended his government’s financial management, stating that the previous administration had continued welfare measures and development programmes despite major challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, repeated floods and what he termed the “biased approach” of the BJP-led Union government toward Tamil Nadu.

Taking an indirect swipe at Vijay’s campaign promise of making only “practically feasible assurances”, Stalin said the new Chief Minister would soon understand the complexities involved in governance and implementing promises.

“You have now entered administration and governance. You will soon realise the difficulties and responsibilities involved in fulfilling promises made to the people. The people of Tamil Nadu and I will be watching,” he said.

Shortly after taking oath at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here, Vijay had alleged that the previous government had left behind a debt burden of nearly Rs 10 lakh crore and an “empty treasury”, adding that his government would soon present a White Paper on the state’s fiscal health.

“I am not a divine messenger. I am one among you,” Vijay had said in his maiden address as Chief Minister while seeking time to stabilise the administration and improve the financial condition of the state.(Agency)

Bhagwant Mann Govt’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana Brings Relief to Patiala Woman Battling Kidney Stones and Diabetes

Bhagwant Mann Punjab CM 4

Chandigarh/Patiala, May 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

By the time the sun rose over Patiala, 46-year-old Sunita Rani had already been awake for hours. Sleep had become difficult. A dull ache gripped her lower back and travelled sharply through her side whenever she tried to stand straight.

Her feet looked puffier each morning, and even walking to the kitchen felt exhausting. She would pause midway, pressing one hand against the wall and the other against her stomach, waiting for the stabbing discomfort to settle.

In spite of the pain, Sunita continued managing her everyday responsibilities, hoping the problem would improve on its own. However, when the pain and the swelling worsened, her family urged her to seek medical help. She had heard about the benefits available under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana and decided to register herself and her family under it.

Sunita immediately registered under the scheme and received a Sehat Card for her family. She was admitted for treatment at Mata Kaushalya Hospital, where doctors conducted detailed examinations and diagnosed her with kidney stones lodged in the ureter. Doctors also found that her diabetes and severe swelling needed urgent attention before surgery could be safely performed.

Sharing her experience, Sunita Rani said, “When the pain became unbearable, I registered under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna and got a Sehat Card made for my family. The doctors examined me and diagnosed kidney stones. Because my sugar levels were very high and there was a lot of swelling, they first started treatment to control both conditions.”

She added, “I am regularly visiting the hospital for check-ups, and the doctors are continuously monitoring my condition. The swelling has reduced now, and my medicines for sugar control have been changed.”

Sunita Rani is happy that she Is getting a cashless treatment. “I have been given another 10-day course of treatment, after which the doctors will decide the date for the operation. From my initial treatment to the surgery in coming days, I will not have to pay anything, and it is such a comfort and relief,” she says.

Doctors explain that kidney stone cases are rising rapidly, especially among patients dealing with diabetes, dehydration, and unhealthy eating habits. According to medical experts, delayed treatment can lead to severe infections and complications. Early diagnosis and timely medical support are therefore extremely important.

For Sunita and her family, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana became a major source of relief during a difficult period. The scheme ensured quick registration, regular medical monitoring, affordable treatment, and access to specialists without financial stress. Most importantly, it gave the family confidence that quality healthcare was within their reach.

Today, Sunita’s condition is improving at a good pace. “The swelling has now reduced, and soon my sugar levels too will be under control. While my treatment is still ongoing, I now face recovery with hope instead of fear, thanks to the Sehat Card.”

She further adds, “I believe that government healthcare schemes like the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana are helping families receive timely medical care without worrying about expenses.” Her story stands as an example of how accessible healthcare and early treatment can transform lives, restore confidence, and support families during medical emergencies.

Murder-text banner

Kolkata, May 10, 2026
The husband of a Trinamool Congress panchayat member was found murdered in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday, police said. The Trinamool Congress alleged that workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) beat him to death, a charge the saffron party has denied.

According to police, the body of the Trinamool leader was recovered from behind the Trinamool party office on Sunday morning. He had gone missing on Saturday. Police said there are multiple injury marks on the body, and a club was also recovered from the scene.

According to police, the name of the deceased Trinamool leader is Sahadev Bagh. He is a resident of the Kota area of Nakunda in Goghat. The deceased’s wife, China Bagh, is a Trinamool Congress member of Kunda Panchayat. The family alleged that BJP workers have been threatening to take Sahadev away since the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results.

Sahadev went missing after leaving his house on Saturday night. Local residents found his body lying in a drain behind the Trinamool party office on Sunday morning.

China Bagh, the wife of the deceased Trinamool leader, said, “BJP workers have been threatening him since the party won the elections. They took him away and killed him. I want punishment for all those who are responsible for his death.”

The deceased’s daughter, Agamoni Bagh, said, “My father was associated. Ever since the party lost the elections, the BJP workers have been threatening us. They killed my father.”

Local Trinamool leader Shashank Dhak said, “We last saw Sahadev yesterday afternoon. Since then, we have not heard from him. This morning, a woman told us that someone’s body was lying in the drain. At first, we could not identify it. Later, we realised that Sahadev had been murdered. BJP people did this.”

However, the BJP has denied the murder charge. Local BJP leader Dolan Das said, “BJP does not do the politics of violence.

They are themselves responsible for this and are blaming the BJP. Since the election results were announced, arrangements are being made to ensure peace in the area on the instructions of our state president, Samik Bhattacharya. I have resolved the problems in the few places where there were troubles. Let the police investigate the incident. Punish whoever is involved.”

People keep falling for same money traps: Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath on ULIPs, endowment plans

Nithin Kamath Zerodha

New Delhi, May 10, 2026
Nithin Kamath has raised concerns over the way Indian investors continue to fall for unsuitable financial products despite easier access to financial education and online information.

In a post on social media platform X, the Zerodha co-founder said that while India has witnessed a massive rise in first-time investors entering mutual funds, stocks and insurance products, many continue to repeat the same financial mistakes year after year.

“When it comes to personal finance, people somehow keep making the same mistakes over and over again. There’s very little creativity in the mistakes people make,” Kamath wrote.

“Take investing. Pretty much every influencer, every serious finance writer, and the financial media have been screaming for years: don’t mix insurance with investments. ULIPs are usually a bad idea. Endowment policies are usually a bad idea,” he added.

Kamath specifically criticised the continued popularity of ULIPs and traditional endowment insurance policies, products that financial planners and investment experts have long warned against.

According to him, despite years of articles, videos and awareness campaigns explaining the drawbacks of these products, their sales continue to rise steadily.

“ULIPs are usually a bad idea. Endowment policies are usually a bad idea. And yet, ULIP sales continue to grow and endowment plans continue to be sold. People continue to fall for the same pitches, despite all the articles, videos, and excel sheets explaining why these products are bad,” he said.

Kamath argued that the problem is no longer a lack of information. Investors today have access to online comparison tools, detailed policy disclosures and AI platforms that can help explain complex financial products in simple language.

“Even a cursory Google search will tell you the problem. And today, in 2026, you can just ask ChatGPT or Claude whether a product is a good idea, and they’ll usually show you the math,” he added.(Agency)

Daughter-in-law arrested for allegedly suffocating homeopathic doctor to death in Ranchi

Arrest Chain

Ranchi, May 10, 2026
A woman has been arrested in Ranchi for allegedly murdering her father-in-law, a well-known homeopathic doctor, by suffocating him with a pillow following a domestic dispute, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Vidyanagar locality under the Pandra OP police station area of the Jharkhand capital and has sparked shock and panic among residents.

The deceased has been identified as Dr K.P. Gupta, a reputed homeopathic practitioner who had been living with his family in Vidyanagar for several years. According to family members and police officials, Dr Gupta had been bedridden for the past few days after suffering from paralysis and was dependent on family members for day-to-day care.

Police said they received information on Saturday regarding the suspicious death of an elderly man at a residence in the locality. Soon after receiving the alert, a team from the Pandra OP police station reached the spot and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

During the preliminary inquiry, police reportedly found certain circumstances inside the house suspicious. The behaviour of family members and conflicting statements during questioning also raised suspicion, following which the victim’s daughter-in-law was taken into custody for interrogation.

According to police, the woman allegedly confessed during questioning that she had frequent arguments with her father-in-law over domestic matters. Investigators said another dispute reportedly broke out between the two on the day of the incident.

In a fit of anger, the accused allegedly pressed a pillow over Dr. Gupta’s face. Since the elderly man was physically weak and bedridden, he was unable to resist. Police suspect that prolonged suffocation led to his death.

As news of the incident spread in the locality, residents gathered outside the house, expressing shock over the alleged involvement of a family member in the crime. The incident has become a major topic of discussion in the area.

Police have sent the body to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Officials said the accused woman remains in police custody and is being further questioned. Investigators are also examining whether there were any additional factors behind the crime.

A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.(Agency)

Sensex, Nifty outlook remains positive despite Iran-US tensions: Analysts

stock-market graph sensex

Mumbai, May 10, 2026
Indian equity benchmarks ended lower on Friday amid rising geopolitical tensions after reported clashes between Iran and the US near the Strait of Hormuz dampened investor sentiment.

Despite the weakness, market experts believe the broader trend for both the Sensex and Nifty remains positive, although volatility could persist in the near term.

The Nifty declined 0.55 per cent to settle at 24,193, while the Sensex fell 0.67 per cent to close at 77,321.

However, both benchmark indices managed to end the week with gains of more than 0.70 per cent despite sharp intra-day swings.

In the broader market, the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.22 per cent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.15 per cent.

According to market experts, the Sensex continues to show strength from a technical perspective despite Friday’s correction.

“In the near term, immediate downside support is placed in the 54,600–54,200 zone in case selling pressure re-emerges,” an analyst stated.

“On the upside, 56,400 acts as immediate resistance, while 56,800 stands as the next key supply zone,” the analyst added.

Traders are advised to remain cautious and follow disciplined risk management while closely tracking key levels for the next directional move, market experts added.

On the Nifty, market experts said the index ended the week at 24,176.15, gaining 178.60 points or 0.74 per cent on a weekly basis.

“On the upside, resistance levels are placed at 24,500 and 24,600. On the downside, support is seen at 24,000 and 23,800. A breakdown below 23,800 could result in increased selling pressure,” an analyst stated.

“Given the current market structure, traders are advised to remain disciplined and adhere to strict stop-loss strategies amid ongoing volatility,” the analyst added.(Agency)
