In a key organizational move, BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Ashwani Kumar Sharma as the Working State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab unit.
Ashwani Sharma, a senior BJP leader, former state president, and current MLA from Pathankot, will take on the responsibilities of steering the party’s affairs in the state alongside current president Sunil Jakhar, who continues to hold the official title.
This appointment comes at a crucial juncture for the party in Punjab. Following the BJP’s underwhelming performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sunil Jakhar had tendered his resignation, taking moral responsibility for the defeat. However, the central leadership rejected his resignation, encouraging him to continue in his role.
Jakhar maintained a low profile in the aftermath of the polls, skipping several party meetings and events. However, he resumed his active involvement in party affairs, indicating a possible reconciliation with the leadership.
With Ashwani Sharma’s return to a leadership role, the BJP aims to revitalize its organizational structure in Punjab, especially as it looks ahead to upcoming local body and assembly elections.
Party insiders suggest that Sharma’s grassroots connect, administrative experience, and regional clout in Pathankot and surrounding areas could prove crucial in strengthening the BJP’s foothold in Punjab, a state where the party continues to face stiff competition from AAP, Congress, and SAD.
More strategic reshuffles and appointments are likely in the coming weeks as part of the BJP’s renewed push to regain momentum in Punjab’s evolving political landscape.
