Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday visited hospitals, police stations and Jantar Mantar, where he met injured students, interacted with detained protesters and reiterated the party’s support for those affected by Monday’s protest over alleged examination paper leaks.
Accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Delhi AAP President Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Atishi, Kejriwal first visited Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, followed by Mandir Marg and Parliament Street Police Stations, before addressing students gathered at Jantar Mantar.
AAP Claims Release of 70–80 Detained Protesters
Kejriwal claimed that AAP leaders had secured the release of 70 to 80 people who were allegedly detained at different police stations following Monday’s protest.
He alleged that several protesters had been booked in false cases and assured affected students and their families that the party would continue providing legal assistance.
Reiterating the party’s helpline, he appealed to anyone facing arrest, detention or legal proceedings to contact 8588833548, saying AAP’s legal team would extend all possible support.
Seeks Details of FIRs and Detentions
Kejriwal said the party had sought three sets of information from the police: a list of all FIRs registered in connection with the protest, details of individuals currently in police custody without FIRs, and information regarding arrests made after registration of cases.
He said transparency regarding those detained was necessary to address the concerns of families searching for their children.
Visits Injured Students at Hospital
Speaking after visiting RML Hospital, Kejriwal said he met injured students undergoing treatment and claimed that most had been discharged except for one girl who remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
He said he had spoken to her family members and wished her a speedy recovery.
Criticises Police Action
Addressing protesters at Jantar Mantar, Kejriwal alleged that the police had used excessive force during Monday’s protest, including baton charges, tear gas shells and stone pelting.
He further alleged that sound equipment at the protest site had been damaged and that several participants were detained after the demonstration.
Targets Prime Minister
During his address, Kejriwal launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the government’s response to students demanding accountability over examination paper leaks reflected an authoritarian approach.
He asserted that the issue had moved beyond the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, stating that the Prime Minister should also be held accountable for the handling of the matter.
Vows to Continue Protest
Kejriwal said the movement would continue until the party’s demands, including reforms aimed at ensuring a transparent examination system, were addressed.
He urged protesters not to be intimidated by legal action, assuring them that AAP would arrange legal assistance wherever required and continue supporting students through democratic and legal means.
