In a written reply to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav informed that 61,112 girls went missing in the state between 2021 and 2025.
Out of these, 3,241 girls remain untraced, according to the latest government data.
The Chief Minister clarified that, following Supreme Court directives, all cases involving missing minor girls are registered as “kidnapped” to ensure prompt and thorough police investigation without any laxity.
Year-wise figures presented in the House showed a rising trend, with 9,407 cases in 2021; 9,093 in 2022; 11,250 in 2023; 11,907 in 2024, and the highest of 13,146 cases in 2025. This marks a concerning increase in reported incidents over the five years.
The chief minister, in his reply, informed the Assembly that 61,498 girls were successfully traced and brought back safely during the same timeframe. This recovery figure also includes many pending cases from pre-2021 years.
The government also noted that 3,627 cases were pending at the start of 2021, reflecting the backlog that authorities had to address alongside fresh reports.
The data, as informed in the reply, further highlighted ongoing challenges, with 6,309 new cases of missing girls already registered in the first five months of 2026 alone.
Search operations and investigations into these fresh incidents are actively underway, the Chief Minister said in his reply.
The Chief Minister, in his reply, also informed that the Madhya Pradesh government is implementing ‘Operation Muskaan’ to prevent the abduction and trafficking of girls across the state.
As part of this comprehensive campaign, ‘Operation Srijan’ focuses specifically on girls while ‘Operation Abhimanyu’ addresses cases involving boys.
Monthly review meetings are being conducted to monitor progress and ensure the swift recovery of missing children.
In addition, the state has established an Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau at the state level and set up dedicated Anti-Human Trafficking Units in all 52 women’s police stations operating across Madhya Pradesh.(Agency)
